Training Schedules

Period Description
Non-training period For at least 2 weeks after State Championships, but generally from the State Championships until the start of the Off Season.

For Masters: Whole of June
Beginners Program Runs for 4 to 5 weeks from end of March through April
Off season

Starts:
The week after the mid-semester break for semester one. Typically, this is mid to late April.
For masters the offseason commences 1 July.

End:
The off season ends either for IV preparation or HOYT preparation.

Intervarsity Championships

A decision must be made at the start of August as to whether the club will send crews to IV, if no crews are sent the off season continues until the start of October.

The IV championships are held during the mid-semester break for semester two, typically at the end of September.

The IV block commences from the start of August until the end of the championships.

Head of the Yarra

HOTY is typically held at the end of November.

The HOTY block commences from the start of October until HOTY.

Summer Season

The summer season commences after HOTY.
The season ends after the state championships in February or March

Masters Season
The masters season runs from March until the end of May.

Beginners Program

The beginners program is all about fun, and getting people new to the sport into the boat right form the start. No previous experience is required! With the fall season coming up, it would be the perfect way to get into a great new water sport while getting fit and meeting great new people!

Squad – Beginners

Aims:

  • Learn how to row
  • Compete in at least 5 regattas
  • Win out of D category

Workload:

Competition Season.
Two water sessions a week; One land based session (any form of training).

Off Season
One to two water sessions a week; One land based session (any form of training).

Coaching:

Competition & Off Season. Two coached sessions a week; Bring up members basic skills in order for them to progress to the intermediate squads the following season.

Squad Size:
Minimum of 7 men or 7 women to form the squad. Both men and women are to train together until total squad size is greater than 16.
Then the squads are to be broken into separate Men and Women’s squads.

Squad – Intermediate

Aims:

  • Compete at as many regattas as possible
  • Win out of C category
  • Compete at Intervarsity

Understand commitment required for attaining success in rowing; Can work well in squad and with other squad members.


Workload:
Competition Season
Two to three water sessions a week; One to two land based session (one down at the club).

Off Season
One to two water sessions a week; One to two land based sessions

Coaching:

Competition Season
At least two coached sessions a week; Clear plan for the squad’s development and identification of key regattas and a strategy for developing skills and experience necessary to progress to senior squad.

Off Season
Two coached sessions a week; Training plan for off-season that builds on key competencies and fitness/strength.

Squad Size:
Minimum of 7 men or 7 women to form the squad. Both men and women are to train together until total squad size is greater than 16. Then the squads are to be broken into separate Men and Women’s squads.

Squad – Masters

Aims:

  • Compete in Masters series of Regattas
  • Compete at Masters State Championships
  • Compete at Masters Nationals where appropriate
  • Compete at RV Score Regattas where possible

Workload:

Competition Season
Three to four water sessions a week; One to two land based session (one down at the club).

Off Season

One to two water sessions a week; One to two land based sessions

Coaching:
Competition Season
At least two coached sessions a week; Clear plan for the squad’s development.

Off Season
Two coached sessions a week; Training plan for off-season that builds on key competencies and fitness/strength.

Squad Size:

Minimum of 7 men or 7 women to form the squad.
Both men and women are to train together until total squad size is greater than 16. Then the squads are to be broken into separate Men and Women’s squads.

Squad – Senior

Aims:

  • Rowing at A/B level competition
  • Compete at Intervarsity
  • Compete at Open State Championships
  • Compete at National Championships

Committment to training schedule, minimum of absenteeism, members can work well in the squad and with other squad members.

Workload:

Competition Season
Three to five water sessions a week (three morning sessions); Two to four land-based sessions (two down at the club).

Off Season
Two to three water sessions a week; Two to three land based sessions.

Coaching:

Competition Season
Three coached sessions a week; Clear plan for the squad’s development and identification of key regattas and a strategy for winning state titles.

Off Season
Two coached sessions a week; Training plan for off-season that builds on key competencies and fitness/strength.

Squad Size:

Minimum of 7 men or 7 women to form the squad. Both men and women are to train together until total squad size is greater than 16. Then the squads are to be broken into separate Men and Women’s squads.

Training Camp

Training camp is usually run between 27 December and 1 January of each year.
